I just returned from Timegate, a local convention that I'm privileged to work on as part of the leadership team. I'll have a more detailed report once I've had some of that "sleep" stuff I keep hearing about, but I did want to mention a high point of the con.
One of our guests was Dr. Kevin Grazier, a scientist from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Aside from Dr. Grazier's part-time work as scientific adviser for such shows as Battlestar Galactica and Eureka, part of Dr. Grazier's work at the JPL involves the Phoenix Mars Lander, which landed...during our con.
We set up a projector, and through the magic of the InterTubes we watched the landing live while Dr. Grazier explained what was going on. The word "cool" just can't do that justice.
Phil Plait, the Bad Astronomer, has been beside himself watching the reports coming in. He made the video below to talk about what is quite possibly the coolest photograph ever taken. Ever.
